A. Lange & Söhne celebrated the grand reopening of their Tokyo boutique on Thursday by introducing two Saxonia Automatic models with a new dial color.
Had Lange been concerned with current trends, they would certainly have unveiled a more colorful Saxonia. But following the industry’s current mood is not the Lange way. Instead, the German watch manufacture continues to expand its palette of neutrals with a “terra brown” dial. It’s the first time this particular color has been used in the Saxonia line, which also includes grey as of 2015, and which included a slate-blue shade in the past, as well as mother-of-pearl). The Saxonia was one of four models offered by Lange when the company began offering watches again in 1994, after being re-established in the wake of German reunification. There have been some minor changes since then (well, maybe not minor to the Lange faithful) in size, and in some details of the dial (the transition from diamond-shaped hour markers to stick markers, for instance), but there is surprisingly distance between a Saxonia of 1994 and one of today.
The current Saxonia Automatic is based on the 2015 refresh, which presented a new minute scale and extended the baton indexes to create a more legible dial. It is powered buy the self-winding Lange caliber L086.1, which has a power reserve of 72 hours.
The new A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia Automatic with terra brown dial is available in pink gold and white gold. Both are priced at $25,800 and come on alligator leather straps that are red brown (for the pink-gold model) or dark brown (for the white-gold model).
