Back at SIHH 2012, Audemars Piguet released the Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin Openworked in platinum. This watch was an instant high-end hit and people (especially people here at HODINKEE) loved it. So you can imagine our excitement to see that AP has re-released the Royal Oak Tourbillon Extra-Thin, now in yellow gold.
As you may know, Audemars Piguet is known for their openworked watches and the great amount of craftsmanship that goes into each piece is incredible. The first skeletonized AP was created around 1921 (a pocket watch with skeletonized dial) and the first skeletonized Royal Oak was made in 1986 (1993 for the first skeletonized women’s Royal Oak), so they have had plenty of time to perfect the technique.
Just like the original Extra-Thin Tourbillon Openworked, the caliber 2924 movement (which was brand new back in 2012, celebrating 40 years of Royal Oak) is used in the new yellow-gold piece. This movement has over 100 polished angles, everything is hand-finished, and it features a 70-hour power reserve. The same vertical layout is used for the tourbillon and the same slate-gray and yellow-gold pieces are used. The case is 41 mm in diameter and the movement (31.5 mm in diameter) is 4.46 mm thick.
This watch was and still is one of the best looking skeletonized tourbillons out there, and is priced at $241,300.
