Now this is an interesting one. Vacheron, which showed both a brand new in-house chronograph AND a brand new self-winding caliber today at SIHH 2016, brings us the purists Overseas – an ultra-thin, white gold watch with not only no date window, but no seconds hand. How? By using one of the most iconic movements in the world – the caliber 1120, or the AP 2120, or what began its life as the JLC 920. Yes, it's the movement used today in the Royal Oak Jumbo, but Vacheron still uses it in a few piece like the Patrimony Traditionelle Self-Winding, and now we see it in what can easily be described as the 222 re-incarnate.
Coming in at 40mm and house exclusively in white gold, the Overseas Ultra-Thin feels very familiar. Inside beats that same 144 component, 2.45 mm thick, self-winding caliber that we all know and love. On the dial side, we see a sunburst grey, display just hours and minutes. And what's more, unlike both the original 222 and the RO Jumbo, there is no date display. This brings the purity of this purist's watch even higher, and I think a lot of people will appreciate this.
The back of the watch reveals the 22k gold oscillating weight featuring alternating polished, sandblasted, and grain finishes. Like the Overseas Chronograph Cara told you about just earlier, this watch will come with a bracelet, rubber, and leather strap, all easily interchangeable.
This new VC Overseas Ultra-Thin looks good, and has some nice design traits, though I'm curious to see how some of the old guards responds, considering this watch is very similar to the Royal Oak 39 mm Jumbo and in fact uses the very same movement that VC purchases from AP. Either way, the fact that is is white gold, comes with strap options, and dateless could pull a few Jumbo die-hards over to VC. Details here.
More to come on this one, for sure.
