I can honestly say this is the watch everyone – though maybe no one more than me – has been waiting for since the 2013 50th anniversary of the Cosmograph Daytona – we now have a steel Daytona with black ceramic bezel! This watch closes the loop on the entire Daytona family, bringing back back the familiar look that we first saw in 1965 with the reference 6240 and ultimately the 6263. Let's get into it.
The 2016 Cosmograph Daytona is very much the same watch as the 2015 Daytona – this is Rolex, after all – though in addition to the black Cerachrom bezel, on the white dialed version above the sub registers now feature black rings instead of silver. The watch remains 40mm and still we have the absolutely superb caliber 4130.
Did I mention it comes in black?
Yeah, it does! So what is the benefit to the Cerachrom bezel? Well, it's corrosion resistan, virtually scratchproof, and the color is impervious to UV rays (that means no patina, ever). Each bezel features a very thin layer of platinum within the numerals and graduation via a PVD process – the entire bezel is a single piece.
Each Daytona will come with a five year warranty and a be a certified Superlative Chronometer, a new set of guidelines set forth by Rolex in 2015 that brings the accuracy to -2/+2 seconds per day.
Pricing of the new steel Daytona is 11,800 Swiss and no word on availability yet. More here.
